Advice & Lenses
When you give advice, what lens are you looking through?
In my personal life I like to practice what I preach. I try to take my own advice before I give it out. Even in my practice and framework, most of what I share is what I've learned through my own life journey. Over the years, I’ve realized that when I step more into specific roles when the time calls—as an individual, a dog mom, a coach, or a healer—the lens changes as I gain more insight through those roles.
What I find quite fascinating is that as I continue to integrate my knowledge and roles, I'm able to not just better understand myself and navigate life, but I'm also able to help others as the whole person they are. Instead of looking at them from one lens, I am now equipped to look at them from all perspectives.
Giving advice is an act of kindness; it doesn't cost much. But, we have to be honest: the guidance we offer through any role we play isn't always the one we would take as an individual. And that’s okay. There's no shame in admitting to that.
Life circumstances play out differently for everyone. An insight that changes everything for one person (or myself) might do nothing for the next three. Advice that works perfectly for a client, a friend or someone else might not be the right guidance for my own specific journey because of who I am.
Advice, philosophies, and all existing knowledge are purely perspectives. When we realize this, we stop trying to "fix" ourselves and the people around us. We start listening and, if applicable, offering them tools they can choose to use or not—based on who they are, if we put in the time to truly get to know them. Sometimes, once we look past the need for control or perfection—if we're honest—we instead completely fall in love with who they truly are just because it's them. And because it's them, all we see now is complete perfection.
So, between your professional role and your individual life:
How do you manage your own ego?
How do you decide which perspective to offer those who interact with you?
Do you truly hear them out, or are you just performing a role?
Are you also allowing yourself to be heard?
P.S.
For those of you asking for an ebook or for me to sell my framework, as of the moment, I don't have plans to. If I were ever to release any books, it would be memoirs of my life. As an individual and a professional, I can provide guidance, but I don't know you well enough to guarantee anything or how you react to life. Everyone reacts to life and guidance differently depending on their life circumstances and who they are. Even if you're struggling with the same topic, your framework and the way you approach life may be different.
Life is messy and confusing. If you view any of my earlier contents or interviews you can probably sense the confusion—you can feel the integrations of my roles and my fragments in progress. By paying attention to my word choices you are witnessing my healing journey and soul evolution, in real time, ranging from personal growth to professional growth. They do go hand in hand. Growth isn't about perfection in the form of control, but in the fluidity of the madness of life. It's in the living, the expression, the release, and the transformation—whatever that means to you. Sometimes we learn things by talking about it because talking to some people, like me, helps process information. At the end of the day though, it all truly comes down to this:
Do I like who I am today, right now?
Have I learned what I didn't know yesterday?
We are on borrowed time with one another. We are each other's checkpoint, physically or energetically. You work hard for your money and your resources. It is yours to enjoy. I would rather have you spend them on something that will actually benefit you. I'm not trying to add more damage to your life; living is already hard enough. If I can't help you or am unsure, I would rather redirect you to resources that can possibly help you—at your freewill—than give you more headaches. I'm not going to pretend to help if I know I can't.
